Vintage Ceramic Hirado Frog / Toad Figurine

These hand-painted ceramic toads are in exceptional condition. No chips, cracks, damages or repairs. These little guys are textured and they have slight crazing.

Hirado was an important ceramic center during the Edo Period of the 17th to late 19th century. The kilns are located at Mikawachi, Sasbo, Nagasaki. The production of the wares was started during the rule of the former feudal Hirado Domain who owned the kilns and were responsible for the direction and production of Hirado wares. Hirado pieces are known for the fine white color of the pottery, and the cobalt blue colors of the blue glazes and early pieces also showed the use of brown glazes. These frogs are paying respect to the early Hirado pieces by the use of the blue and brown glazes. The objects were made after 1950, the exact date of manufacture is unknown.
